The Ellis Hotel Receives Exceptional Merit Award For Historic Preservation
Recognized by the Atlanta Regional Commision

Released: November 30, 2009

Atlanta, Ga. – Nov. 30, 2009 - The Ellis Hotel, downtown Atlanta’s newest chic boutique hotel, has been awarded with the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Exceptional Merit Award for Historic Preservation at the Atlanta Regional Commission’s “State of the Region” breakfast. Five other trend-setting developments and five innovative initiatives by local governments in metro Atlanta were also recognized.

The ARC is the regional planning and intergovernmental coordination agency for the 10-county area and helps to focus the region’s leadership, attention and resources on key issues of regional consequence.

“We are so pleased that The Ellis Hotel has been recognized as one that contributes to the creation of a prosperous future for Atlanta,” co-owner Susan Griffin says. “One initiative at a time, The Ellis Hotel is truly making a difference in the community.”
Despite structural challenges, the historic Winecoff Hotel was transformed into the luxurious Ellis Hotel after a $28 million restoration, maintaining many of its historic architectural characteristics. Two almost century-old steel haunches uncovered after demolitions were still in good shape and were used to support two new deep steel beams framed around the new central interior stair. Additionally, the two lower-level facades were demolished and replaced with a historically compatible, cast-stone façade detailed from historic photographic evidence.
Blending a legendary past with the plush comforts of tomorrow, The Ellis Hotel features a women’s only floor, 127 guest rooms, 12 junior suites and an executive suite, all adorned with a palette of Georgia-inspired earth tones and sleep designs characteristic of boutique style yet comfy and functional.

Terrace on Peachtree, overlooking the heart of downtown Atlanta’s business district, celebrates American heirloom recipes through supporting local and regional farmers, fishermen and purveyors. The menu recaptures the pure simple flavors and tastes of natural and organic ingredients while bursting with delicious flavors and unique combinations and textures.
Recently honored with Atlanta’s Downtown Design Excellence award and Atlanta’s Urban Design Commission Award for historic preservation, 2008, The Ellis Hotel exudes a perfect blend of southeast sophistication and charm. All rooms include 32” LCD flat screens, plush king size beds with ostrich leather headboards and iPod docking stations and offer a personal honor bar stocked with a variety of treats ranging from Ellis Georgia Peace Cobbler Jam and Terra Chips to Red Bull Energy Drinks and KamaSutra Body Paint.
